WorkSimple, what ties us together

 

“What’s the one thing that connects employees to their company?” The first time I was asked this question by my co-founder, Morgan Norman, I was surprised by the simplicity of his answer. Goals. The goals of a company impact all of its employees and also motivate them collectively.

You could make a sarcastic remark that “the lunchroom” is what ties employees together, or reply with a more meta-level comment like “time” or “existence.” But I challenge you to come up with a more all-encompassing answer than the goals of the business as the binding element between employees and their company.

For example, is your product team working in a vacuum? Knocking off features for the fun of it? Just ask your sales team — of course not. Sales people depend on the product meeting their customers’ needs. And it’s the same for your sales team: closing a new deal does not affect just your sales department’s ability to hit its numbers. Your product team will need information about the new customers, how the sales numbers will affect scale, what features will have to be tweaked to meet new customers’ needs, and so on.

Planning and creating goals, tracking their progress, accomplishing them, and feeling great about the achievement — this is what unifies a work force.
